Washington Park tennis courts in Peru are being renovated – Shaw Local

The Washington Park tennis courts in Peru are getting some well-deserved love.

Construction is underway on a $268,840 project with SKI Sealcoating and Maintenance to resurface three international-sized tennis courts and add four new pickleball courts, as well as install new fencing and sidewalks in the region.

In November, the Peru board was approached by pickleball players looking for more court options. The city has five courts that players can use for pickleball at several locations in Washington Park. Three of the courts are located where the rink is, which means they are not available when the rink is in use.

The city council said an important first step to providing more pickleball options will be the renovation of the Washington Park courts, which could open in early summer.

A spring project will restore three tennis courts and add four new pickleball courts at Washington Park in Peru.

Reviewing other possible developments in Washington Park, Department of Parks and Recreation Director Adam Thorsen recently said the city is still in the running for an open land acquisition and development grant with the ‘State. With the grant, significant upgrades would be available, including a chiller to keep the rink frozen longer, a club-like building for skate rentals and locker rooms, and a Zamboni to maintain the ice. If the proposal is accepted, the grant would be $400,000 with an assumed agreement of a matching contribution of $400,000 by the city to complete the work.

Just west of the rink, a new building is proposed that will serve a variety of purposes. The building will have space for skate rentals, concessions, men’s and women’s locker rooms and washrooms, and a shelter with fire pit.

Other park upgrades include a bocce ball area, bags and an obstacle course/ninja warrior for everyone to enjoy. New walking paths between the senior and Little League courts and renovated tennis courts are part of the proposal.

The city could hear news on the grant by the end of the month.
