The pandemic has spawned many home chefs, who have discovered a deep and deep love for cooking! Surprisingly, I was one of them. Before the pandemic, cooking was a chore that I avoided completely. But now I honestly find it quite therapeutic! The pandemic, and all the free time that came with it, kind of woke up my inner chef, and I love using kitchen appliances in my cooking process. I think they really cut my prep time, simplify complicated and tedious procedures, and make mundane little kitchen tasks quite bearable. But quite frankly, I’m sick of the usual and traditional household appliances that are lined up in my kitchen cabinet. So how about kitchen accessories that promise to be totally fun and original, that not only look super cool but are also interesting to use? In my quest for appliances that will brighten up my kitchen space and cooking process, I’ve come across a whole bunch of designs that I’m dying to buy now! From an adorable penguin-shaped egg cooker and stand to a back-scratching grizzly that will grate your veggies, herbs and cheese – these fun yet functional appliances are the breath of fresh air your kitchen needs!
Made from heat-resistant, food-safe plastic, Egguins are an innovative way to store, boil or serve eggs. The hollow shape of the penguin allows you to slip eggs (small and large) into it, visually complementing it and making it look like a flock of emperor penguins ready to rush into the water (the visual metaphor for connecting the l egg, bird, and the water is just perfect)! Submerge the Egguins in a pot of boiling water using the handle above and simply remove them when you have finished boiling them to a softness or hardness of your choice.
This unique and playful grater comes from OTOO, one of our favorite design houses, as part of their new catalog of kitchen and home items. Barry’s back scratching abilities work best with carrots and cheeses, as his metal back grates your produce into a thin pile that coalesces inside Barry’s chubby old body. Lift Barry up and your grated cheese or carrot is gathered in a nice pile, ready to use in your cooking or garnish!
Food crayons don’t really need much explanation – traditional crayons are made from wax and dye and are shaped into a pencil shape… Food crayons, on the other hand, are made from ingredients. food suspended in an edible substrate, agar-agar. Commonly used as a gelling agent and vegan alternative to gelatin of animal origin, agar helps bind the ingredients together in the shape of the pencil. Once the pencil is cast, they can easily be shaved over the food, flavoring it in an absolutely engaging and exciting way!
The OTOTO Tea Trap gives a fun twist to the art of brewing tea. Unlike those boring metal infusers, the Tea Trap is inspired by a carnivorous plant that eats away at your tea leaves. Once the stomach (or mouth) of the tea trap is full, simply dip it in a cup of hot water and the tea will begin to brew through the perforations on the sides of the infuser. Use the elongated handle of the tea trap to stir it until your tea reaches the right color, and when you are done, the tea trap will spit out the tea leaves very nicely into the trash because no one likes to eat tea leaves… not even carnivorous plants!
Inspired by a bird, Beerdy by Peleg Design is the most patient bottle opener you have ever encountered! You can use Beerdy to crack open your beer for you and then place it on the cap of your next beer. He’ll be patiently waiting there, while you finish your beer, and get ready to drink the next one! How cool is that? Beerdy is the most trusted bottle opener I’ve seen.
The Conchiglie is a neat conch-shaped device directly inspired by conchiglie pasta. Yellow in color and molded in food grade silicone, the Conchiglie comes with a hollow interior perfectly sized for half a lemon. Slip the lemon in and squeeze it out from the outside and the Conchiglie does a great job of squeezing the juice out of the lemon without your hands sticking and messing up. The silicone construction gives you the friction and grip you need, and a small colander at the end of the conch helps catch the lemon seeds while you squeeze the juice.
Designer Gil Cohen created Pelix for Peleg Design, an adorable kitchen companion that will reduce your internal squeals and improve your mood while doing the dishes. This little pelican-shaped cloth and sponge holder will be perched on your counter and the only thing that will hit the nail on the head is the time taken to do the chores. Pelix’s shiny snap is actually a fabric backing, so hang this tea towel while the pelican’s body is a mug for your sponge. Pelix makes it easy to keep dish cleaning essentials where they are needed with its suction cup bottom, but unlike Ross Geller, it can swivel and make your life easier!
These tongs feature a nested design that turns them into a handy juicer when put together. However, when you are done drizzling your salad with lemon juice, simply split the tongs into two spoons and throw in your greens! The 2 in 1 design of the Juicepair makes it convenient when in use as well as when storing. When locked, it’s easy to store them in the drawer without worrying about one missing, and during use, the dual-purpose design makes the pliers the perfect tool set. for extracting citrus juices, mixing / stirring foods, or even serving tasty dishes.
The biggest mammal in the world will now help you keep your teeth clean! Jonah-The Toothpick Dispenser from Peleg Design is a carefree blue whale, which stores toothpicks in its belly and releases them through its beak. Just shake the dispenser and choose the lucky one that escapes through Jonah’s spout.
