Halloween decorations can be dangerous for wildlife | WUTR/WFXV

ELMIRA, NY (WETM) — With Halloween almost here, it’s important to be aware of the threat certain Halloween decorations can pose to wildlife.

Outdoor fake cobwebs can be particularly harmful to animals, such as birds. The material they are made of is easy for birds to catch.

There are still ways to view cobwebs while being aware of wildlife. Rehabilitation specialists recommend not placing it in places where birds frequently fly, such as between trees. A safer option is to display it in a window, a closed entrance, or even hang it on something sturdy.

Cobwebs aren’t the only potentially dangerous outdoor decorations, as small plastic pieces on the decorations can be mistaken for food or loops on the decorations can suffocate animals.

Other holidays can also pose a threat to wildlife, such as Christmas, where birds can potentially rest in wreaths or Christmas trees. The best thing to do is to pay attention to the birds and think of them when decorating. Often when trapped they can be easily released by a wildlife rehabilitator.
