Major construction is underway for a $ 2.8 million renovation of Delta College’s public media facilities, a project that will also see the creation of a new university center for students in the electronics and journalism programs of school.

Current facilities date back to Delta’s inception in 1961 and have only undergone minor updates since. College officials are eager to unveil a newly designed facility that will be equipped to provide more opportunities for students.

“We are excited to be renovating the college’s public media facilities and being able to create more learning and internship opportunities for our electronic media and journalism students,” said Tom Bennett, Managing Director of Public Media at Delta. . “This will allow us to create new productions of public media radio and television shows, local documentaries and local news developments for our students at Delta College. “

The 11,300 square foot renovation is one of 10 state university and community college capital projects that have been approved by Governor Gretchen Whitmer as part of a supplementary appropriations bill for COVID-19 relief in January 2021. State and Delta are splitting the cost of the project.

The new improved space will include a computer lab, classrooms, an equipment warehouse, student workspaces and a common area that forms a university center.

“It will be a state-of-the-art space for students, faculty and staff to collaborate, socialize and learn,” Bennett said.

Jonathan Garn, Associate Dean of Arts & Letters, said: “We wanted to create a collaborative environment for everyone to learn and develop. “This redesigned space will benefit the educational and professional goals of our students, as we are in the unique position of having a public broadcasting station in our college.”

Faculty members who worked in newsrooms provided valuable input that helped shape the design of the new space, Garn added.

Students working for Delta’s student newspaper, “The Collegiate,” will also have a new home. Their current office, located in the upper A wing, will move to the newly renovated lower A wing.

Bennett said the project offers multiple benefits to students and staff.

“It will centralize Delta College’s academic programs, extracurricular activities, and public media and television operations into a cohesive public media center,” Bennett said. “We anticipate that the project will be completed in spring 2022 with academic activities scheduled to begin later in the fall semester.”
