At a city council meeting on September 7, the town of Sugar Land presented six unique wooden information boxes with information about free mental health resources that will be placed throughout the city on September 10.

“This project came about in response to two community needs,” said Suzanne Gray, the city’s cultural arts director, at a meeting in June to discuss the call for artists for the program. “COVID[-19] not only affected the bottom line of companies, but the mental health of many people. Nationally, suicide rates have peaked in 30 years. Grants from Fort Bend County became available and the city saw an opportunity to match support to our businesses, the creative sector and mental health through this project. “

The project was executed through a partnership with To Write Love on Her Arms, a nonprofit movement dedicated to presenting hope and seeking help for those struggling with depression, drug addiction, self-harm and suicidal thoughts.

“What’s amazing is that we are able to start a conversation about mental health and also provide resources to those who need them most,” said Star Gilani, Development Liaison Officer. economy of Sugar Land, when the boxes were presented in September.

The boxes, which feature uplifting designs such as flowers and frogs, will be placed throughout the city, alongside positive messages embellishing sidewalks. They were each designed and created by local artists.

“It’s a unique approach, but one that matches the interest expressed by the residents of Sugar Land in public art to beautify the city,” Gray said in June. “This project allows us to provide that while making mental health materials readily available to everyone. “
