Trichy: The Cauvery bridge linking Srirangam island with Cheated the mainland is due to be shut down over the next few months for major maintenance work at 6.9 crore. District Collector M Pradeep Kumar and state highway department officials, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) and city police inspected the bridge on Monday to finalize alternate routes for vehicles as the bridge is set to remain closed for the next 3-5 months.
“After four decades, we are going to change the bridge bearings. The strip seals will be replaced so that the road surface of the bridge is flat and free of bumps,” said a senior highway department official.
Pending the end of the renovation work, diversions are planned for all types of vehicles. While two-wheelers, cars and autorickshaws are likely to reach Srirangam via Kumbakonathan Road, buses can use Y Junction Road near the Srirangam RTO Desk.
The other Cauvery Bridge on the Trichy-Chennai trunk road must be used to reach Srirangam. While traffic police suggested some diversions to avoid bottlenecks near Sanjeevi Nagar and Kondayampettai, TNSTC officials disagreed due to high fuel expenses.
The traffic police said the appropriate diversion routes will be finalized in consultation with the district administration before the bridge is closed. The highways department has planned to work all night to reopen the bridge as soon as possible.
