Bluffton, South Carolina (October 24, 2022) – The West Course at Belfair, a gated community in Bluffton, South Carolina, recently reopened after a five-month, $5.8 million renovation of the golf course. The project, which began in mid-May, included a new irrigation system, re-grassing the greens, renovating the bunkers, and other projects to improve the playability and aesthetics of the award-winning course . Fazio Design led the renovation project for the original West Course designed by Tom Fazio, which opened in 1996. Leibold Irrigation, a leader in golf course construction and renovation, executed the construction work.
The renovations included the installation of a new pumping station and a new Rain Bird irrigation system with a state-of-the-art mobile irrigation management tool allowing the agronomy team to perform real-time diagnostics and system operation from the office, on the course, or wherever the superintendent is on any internet-connected device. Additionally, 13 greens have been restored to their original size and five greens have been enlarged to allow for more pin placement locations. The greens have also been re-turfed with TifEagle ultra-dwarf hybrid Bermuda grass. The course’s 63 bunkers have been redesigned and remodeled for playability and visual appeal. Fabric bunker liners, sand and drainage have been removed and replaced with a new polymer based capillary concrete liner system. This new, technically advanced lining method increases the rate at which water flows through the bunker, minimizing washouts, reducing maintenance and producing superior playability. The new G-Angle bunker sand is now in all bunkers. Tee boxes have also been expanded on the course and new front “Advantage Tees” have been added on all 18 holes totaling (3,800 to 4,000 yards) so all ages and skills can enjoy the game. renovation project also included extensive tree trimming to improve tree and turf health as well as better sightlines.
The short game area of the Belfair West Course was also improved and extended during the refurbishment, as trees were cleared and a new short game green, fairway and bunker were added.
“Tom Fazio has taken a beautiful canvas and created a Low Country masterpiece. With help from Fazio’s design team and our Troon partners, the West course has been revamped, refined and is ready for the future,” said Chris Cento, President of Belfair.
Belfair has two championship golf courses designed by Tom Fazio that exemplify the beauty of the Lowcountry. The West Course opened in 1996 with Magazine Links proclaiming it “…the finest set of golf holes in the Lowcountry, if not the East Coast.” The par-72 West Course plays 7,111 yards from the championship tees. Belfair’s East Course opened in 1999 and is reminiscent of the Scottish links while showcasing views of the region’s deep waters, freshwater lakes and lagoons. The par-71 layout measures 6,900 yards from the championship tees. Golf week magazine ranks both courses among the “Best Residential Courses” in the United States in their 2022 rankings, as well as perennial recipients of Golf Digest’s “Best Courses in South Carolina” list.
